Hyung Do Kim (김형도), Ph.D. — Associate Professor, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Ajou University
Hyung Do Kim is an Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Ajou University, where he leads the Applied Physics of Functional Materials Laboratory (APFM Lab). He received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Yeungnam University (2011) and his M.S. (2014) and Ph.D. (2017) in Polymer Chemistry from Kyoto University, Japan. After working as a JSPS Research Fellow and a postdoctoral fellow, he was appointed Assistant Professor (tenured) in the Department of Polymer Chemistry at Kyoto University in 2018, and joined Ajou University in September 2026.
His research focuses on organic and inorganic semiconductor-based optoelectronic materials and devices, with emphasis on charge and ion dynamics, photophysics and device physics. Using time-resolved spectroscopy, scanning-probe microscopy and device analysis, he has elucidated efficiency-limiting factors in polymer and perovskite solar cells and established design principles for charge transport in conjugated polymer blends. He has published 78 papers, including 68 peer-reviewed journal articles (33 as corresponding author; 1,803 citations, h-index 20 on Google Scholar as of 2026-09) in journals including Advanced Materials, Advanced Energy Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, ACS Energy Letters, Nature Communications and Nano Energy.
He is also active in Korea–Japan academic exchange: he founded the Korea–Japan Science and Technology Innovation Forum and the Wiley Small Science Symposium, and serves as Head of the Asia Region of KSIEC and Vice Chair of the International Cooperation Committee of the Polymer Society of Korea, after leading the Japan Region of KIChE.
Courses at Ajou University will be listed from the 2026–2027 academic year.
